Trivia
Harold also appears in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and the tie-in novel The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer

Twin Peaks revolves around its townspeople and their connections to each other after the murder of popular homecoming queen Laura Palmer. As the series progresses, we learn that Laura led a secret, double life - as do many of the other people in town.

Donna Hayward, whose best friend was Laura Palmer, decides to take over Laura's former Meals on Wheels route to discover more about its recipients. On her first day, she encounters a mysterious grandmother and her grandson who direct Donna to "Mr. Smith next door. He was Laura's friend." The grandmother goes on to tell Donna that, "Mr. Smith does not leave his house." Donna knocks at his door, and when he doesn't answer, she leaves a short note with her number, which Harold responds to that night, telling her they should meet the next day.

The Man Behind The Glass (2.003, Episode 10)

Harold tells Donna that he cannot leave the house. He asks if she will place an orchid on Laura's grave. Later that night, Donna visits Harold's house again, unannounced, after becoming upset with her boyfriend. When Harold leaves the room, Donna is shocked to find Laura's diary on his writing table.

Laura's Secret Diary (2.004, Episode 11)

Harold and Donna have an indoor picnic where Harold reads a passage from Laura's diary. Donna suggests he turn the diary over as evidence. Upset, he replies that Laura gave it to him for safekeeping. "People come to me and tell me their stories, about the world outside. I take their stories and place them in a larger context, a sort of living novel."

The Orchid's Curse (2.005, Episode 12)

Donna visits Harold again and offers her stories in exchange for entries from Laura's diary. He replies that he'll read it to her, but it mustn't physically leave the room. Almost as soon as Donna begins her story, she takes hold of the diary and goes outside, forcing Harold to leave his home. He has a terrible reaction and collapses.

Later that evening, Donna creates a plan. Laura's cousin Maddy will enter Harold's home and steal the diary, which he keeps in a hidden bookshelf, while Donna distracts him. Donna chooses to seduce Harold with a story. They find themselves in his greenhouse. When he leaves the room to find a vase for an orchid, she signals Maddy to enter. Already suspicious of her behavior, Harold hears Maddy as she accidentally moves the shelf too loudly. Upset to learn of her betrayal, Harold rushes after Donna and Maddy into the living room. He confronts them, a hand cultivator in his grip, asking them if they're looking for secrets, before wounding his face.

Demons  (2.006, Episode 13)

Emotionally broken, Harold accuses Donna, "You're just like the others. You lie, you betray, and then you laugh about it. You are unclean. You have contaminated me." Just as Harold reaches for the diary, Donna's boyfriend James enters and pushes Harold against the wall. Taking hold of Maddy's hand, James leads the girls out of the apartment. The diary falls to the floor, and Harold rushes to collect it. After Donna and James reconcile outside his house, we see Harold feverishly spraying his orchids with poison. The last time we see him he is crying out in anguish.

Lonely Souls  (2.007, Episode 14)

(Mentioned only. Mr. Von Dohlen had a stand-in.)

Donna tells the police department that Harold has Laura's diary. With a warrant to search his apartment, Deputy Hawk finds Harold's door unlocked and his lifeless body suspended from the ceiling of his greenhouse. They discover a note tucked into his shirt, J'ai une âme solitaireMysteriously, this is the same phrase the grandson said in Donna's presence before she visited Harold's home for the first time.

Arbitrary Law (2.009, Episode 16)

(Mentioned only)

When Donna learns of the note found on Harold's body, she informs the FBI Agent in charge of Laura's case. The FBI Agent and Donna visit the grandmother and grandson's house but find another woman living there who claims no knowledge of the other occupants. However, in hearing her name, the woman gives Donna an envelope she found mixed with her mail the morning after Harold died. In the envelope are two of Laura's diary entries.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer

Harold also appears in the Twin Peaks tie-in novel, The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, written by Jennifer Lynch.

The few entries featuring Harold add to his mystery. In the second entry mentioning him Laura writes, "Harold Smith was my other delivery. As I think I told you, he's an interesting man. Very handsome. Apparently he was a botanist. For some reason he can't remember, he awoke one morning to find himself an agoraphobic. He believes death is just outside the door, and that late at night it calls to him from outside like a strange bird."

Laura also writes that she loves spending time with Harold and most often feels wonderful when she is with him and when she thinks of him. In the same entry she writes that he will not return her advances, no matter how mild, and that he reacts to them with fear and near violence. She later confesses to sexually assaulting Harold, and that he wouldn't talk to her for an hour afterward because she'd made him so scared. On the final page of the diary, Laura writes that she's found that someone is tearing the pages from her diary, and she's going to leave the diary with Harold for safekeeping.

If you would like to read about the books in Harold's apartment, Steven Miller of Twin Peaks Blog listed several titles here. I found a few as well. More here
