While vacationing with her husband, Marie Davenport (Theresa Russell) decides it's time to confess that she's been having an affair. As she gains courage, her husband (Mark Harmon) is struck by a boat while swimming, killing him. Marie is wracked with guilt and tormented by the realization that she'll never see, hear, or touch him again.
Marie returns to L.A. and her old apartment. As she walks along the cliffs, besieged by butterflies, she is reminded of a vision she once had of a mysterious glowing pool and a voice calling her name.
She returns to her hotel room and sees a note on the door. Believing she's missed her lover, Daniel (James Russo), Maria rushes to his room. To her shock, she finds her husband, Alex inside. A different person in appearance and behavior, Alex won't allow her to ask questions, though he asks Marie if his death truly was an accident. She wants to comfort him, but he won't let her near him. He finally gives her a description of waking in the morgue and thinking it was all a bad dream. He tells her to come back later as he begins to weaken and fade. When she returns, he does not respond to her touch and seems to have died again.
Though she confesses that she's a non-believer, Marie visits Monsignor Cassidy (Richard Bradford) and shares her vision. There was a stillness. The ocean seemed to stop, but the cypress trees were blowing. There were glowing pools and a teenage girl appeared out of one of them. She was wearing a veil and a white dress. She told her to tell the priests to rebuild the sanctuary. The Monsignor is skeptical and dismissive, frustrating Marie.
Marie returns to Alex, who is still bewildered. He doesn't understand what's happened to him. He stares at a painting of churning waves. Slowly, he comes towards her, and as he says he remembers, he collapses in her arms.
A nun confesses that she has had a recurring dream of a woman haunted by the Virgin Mary. The Holy Mother begs the woman to build a sanctuary. The nun shares that she did not know the woman until she saw her in the church yesterday. Her name is Marie Davenport.
At the height of her despair, Marie confides in the priest (Will Patton), and Alex becomes well enough to be discharged from the hospital. He tells her to go back to Carmel.
Marie experiences another vision, accompanied by a windstorm and lightning. The most dramatic yet, and it leads to a change in her life.
Mr. Von Dohlen portrays a motel clerk who interacts with Marie and the priest.
