A lonely young mail clerk, William Dalton (Lenny Von Dohlen), carries a secret, obsessive love for Leanne Dunaway (Deborah Shelton), a secretary at his office who also lives in an apartment across from his. William is too shy to speak to Leanne, but, to be closer to her, he spies on Leanne through a telephoto lens he has fixed on her apartment. William feels he's formed a connection with Leanne, and that their time "together" has helped him know her better. In his mind, as he reads to himself, he reads his poetry to her, and eating alone, he eats his dinner with her. His therapist is under the impression that William has been in a relationship with Leanne for eight months. When he oversleeps, his mother calls and berates him for being late, displaying his frantic and nervous nature.

One day, William summons the courage to purchase a single rose and place it on Leanne's desk, only to have another office employee, Gregg, falsely claim it was he who left it. Gregg soon starts seeing Leanne. William also notices an older man visiting Leanne at work.

William is persuaded to become intoxicated at an office party and arrives home barely able to walk up the stairs. He is distraught and will not watch as Leanne and Gregg make love. Because of this, he does not see when Gregg's life is taken after he leaves Leanne's apartment.

William becomes a suspect in Gregg's murder, and has cause to worry about Leanne after he sees her interact with the mysterious older man again. All spirals out of his control, but will William find a light in the darkness?

The last six images, from ivid.it, can no longer be found as the site has been under maintenance for years. The image of Leanne in a sweatshirt is a deleted scene as is the second to last image of William in a blue sweater. Note that he has replaced the telephoto-lens camera with the birdcage from Leanne's apartment. This causes me to wonder if the dialogue we hear before the end credits is from this scene. William also added two framed photos of Leanne to his wall. The image of William crying also does not appear in the film, though we see him crying while wearing the same shirt and in the same room. I imagine the scene was shortened.
