Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story is a fictional account of the life of Dorothy Day. Day (Moira Kelly) is a passionate young woman who gives herself wholly to the causes she supports, from fighting for a woman's right to vote to raising awareness of the horrors endured by the lower class.
Dorothy is a strong and independent writer who uses her position at a newspaper to enlighten others. She keeps company with many literary greats and is in love with fellow writer Lionel Moise (Boyd Kestner). When she learns that she is pregnant, Moise forces her to have an abortion. He cruelly abandons her shortly afterward, ending their relationship with a note.
Enraged and hurt, Dorothy takes a cabin on Staten Island, hoping to heal. One day, while walking along the shore, she encounters a fisherman she realizes she met in Greenwich Village years earlier, Forester Batterham (Lenny Von Dohlen). The two share similar views. Despite her hesitation, Dorothy finds herself falling in love.
By chance, Dorothy learns of a charity program at a local church run by Sister Aloysius (Melinda Dillon). Rather cynical and without faith, Dorothy is slightly taken aback by her introduction to Catholicism. She's not sure she can trust it, but intrigued, she begins to help feed those in need and eventually begins attending mass. Dorothy's life is changed, but she is faced with more trails than she ever imagined.
