A couple's life is disrupted by a chance encounter with Simon Jury (James Remar) man who saved the husband's life 20 years earlier.
The memory of his encounter leads Matt (Lenny Von Dohlen) to confess he should have died when his car was rigged to explode. His wife Laura (Suzy Amis) was unaware of his experience, and the revelation drives a wedge between the pair. Matt feels compelled to repay Simon, but, unaware of his location, he hires a detective (John Savage) to find him.
Once found, Matt offers to help Simon with a loan until he can get back on his feet, but Simon refuses, saying he doesn't owe him anything for saving his life. Matt offers him a job at his production company, but Simon refuses that as well, saying he has to take care of a friend who is dying of cancer. Matt has him promise to call him if he changes his mind, which happens faster than anticipated. It isn’t long until Simon has moved into the couple’s pool house, offering to help Laura reupholster a chair for her antique store. While asking about the chair, Simon learns from Matt that Laura once had an affair with an antiques dealer she met in New Orleans, though he says they’re fine now. Their marriage is strong.
Simon decides to test the strength of their vows along with Matt’s sanity, effectively manipulating them while playing innocent. When confronted with information that conflicts with what he knows of Matt, he refuses to believe it.
Matt is forced to leave Laura while on vacation due to an emergency at work. While he’s away, Simon attempts to seduce Laura. Additional information is revealed regarding Simon, and matters escalate thereafter.
