A cross-training athlete comes upon the body of Adam Metzger (Lenny Von Dohlen), a professor of cultural anthropology at a local college. His arms and legs are bound, and his body, covered in wounds, is suspended from a tree. A dog's corpse is located nearby, causing Lt. Horatio to believe it may be the work of a cult.

When an autopsy is performed, they discover the professor suffered extensive torture. Horatio says if it were a cult, then Metzger is like a life-sized voodoo doll.

The university dean claims the professor's students loved him, but he was not without controversy for his extreme messages. Other professors and parents hated him, and it is no surprise to the dean that Metzger is dead. They also learn that the professor's students were close enough to him that they had access to his house, and often did errands for him.

The CSI team uncovers the professor's experiments, his assistant, and evidence of his truly disturbing behavior. Discovering an accomplice, they return to the professor's house, which leads them on the path to the person responsible for his death.
