Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a woman with the ability to speak to the dead, meets a troubled young girl in foster care who seems to be followed by misfortune. The girl, Julie, believes that she's cursed, and Melinda is almost inclined to agree as she witnesses supernatural events occur in the girl's presence.

Feeling a desire to help Julie, her caseworker (Lenny Von Dohlen) suggests that Melinda and her husband foster her. They agree, but are unprepared for the unusual events that follow.

When Melinda tries to talk to Julie, the door locks itself, and the lights turn off. When Melinda's husband tries to enter, he sees items strewn across the room. The girl tells them she just wants it to stop.

When Melinda resumes Julie's piano lessons, her teacher is surprised to learn she now has a foster mother. Her birth mother always seemed very doting. Hearing this, Melinda asks a policeman friend to run a check on Julie's mother.

Melinda conducts an investigation of her own, learning from a former landlady that Julie’s mother had a baby who died, and was distraught after undergoing a hysterectomy. She had her name on every adoption list, but the landlady states that if she adopted a child, it was after she knew her.

Hoping to create a connection with what haunts her, Melinda and her team experiment with Julie. A ghost appears, her mother, and she says Julie mustn't know, and she's come to take her back. Melinda knows she must do what she can to protect Julie.
