The plot synopsis as shared in the theatre program:
The play is set in 1964 in St. Nicholas Catholic Parish in Bronx, New York. The Parish Priest, Father Flynn, preaches a sermon. "What do you do when you're not sure?" Sister Aloysius, principal of St. Nicholas School, meets with Sister James, an eighth grade teacher in her second year. She reviews the young teachers performance and warns her to be vigilant in class. Father Flynn coaches the school boys on free throws and personal hygiene. Sister James reports to Sister Aloysius an incident with one of her students, who behaved oddly after a talk with Father Flynn. He provides a plausible explanation, but Sister Aloysius is unconvinced. Father Flynn preaches a sermon on gossip. Father Flynn encounters Sister James in the garden; she is upset by the proceedings, but believes Father Flynn is innocent. Sister Aloysius meets with the boy's mother, but the outcome is not what she expected. A confrontation Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn leaves theatergoers with much to discuss.
